The Power of Now (what I was saying)

I will admit that this topic has me a bit stumped. It is part of a blog hop of ICA students and graduates. Every month a group of us select a topic – that usually is the easy part. Then drawing from our unique perspectives as coaches and our various specialties, we write something on the topic.

Up to this point, I’ve found the topics fairly ‘easy’ to write about. At least as easy as writing comes to me! This topic though, The Power Of Now, seems so big I’m not sure how to tackle it. And maybe that is the point – what really is The Power of Now? What does it mean? Why should I care about it as a coach or as a client?

According to Wikipedia (the up to date Web encyclopedia, did you know that in terms of updating information… oops, I guess instead of chasing the impact Wikipedia has on research today, let me see … I was writing about something, now what was that?) Oh yeah, The Power of Now – being in the moment and not only being focused but being Present in the moment. Ah, now what is that?

Being Present in the moment means to let all other parts of our life and existence just be – no worries, no frets, no recriminations (had to look up how to spell that, and did you know that Merriam-Webster has a free on-line dictionary… oops, back to the topic). Now what was I saying – yes, being Present allows us to understand how to lose the stress of so much of our lives and exist. Breathing deeply, focusing on just one thing, allowing our sense of self, our higher self or god or goddess, fill us with LIFE. Just being.

The Power of Now allows us to totally be focused on the person we are interacting with at that moment. They have our 100% attention – listening, hearing, loving, helping. While most coaches create the space during coaching to allow our clients to experience The Power of Now, anyone can create that experience with anyone else. When we are with our children, our partners, our families, friends, or even strangers – we can BE just for them.

What does that mean to someone making a presentation, asking for a raise, going to an interview or selling a product? Communication, especially verbal communication, is more impactful when you as the communicator are 100% Present – The Power of Now comes across when you speak. Think back to when a speaker totally engaged you and you were on the edge of your seat listening? That person was totally Present and focused on communicating.
